9ct Green Tourmaline Cabochon Stud Earrings

Two green tourmaline cabochons, 6mm by 4.2mm, held in rub-over bezels edged with gold beads that were made and applied one at a time at the bench.

The beading is doing real work. A cabochon has no facets to throw light back at you, so the metal has to do it instead, and a row of beads around the rim catches enough movement to stop a small stud reading flat. It is the same detail that runs through the swirl ring and the infinity pendant, and it is lifted straight out of our founder’s own work.

A rub-over bezel also brings the gold up over the edge of the stone rather than gripping it with claws. Nothing catches on a jumper, nothing needs checking every few months, and the tourmaline is protected where cabochons usually get knocked.

Green tourmaline is an easier colour to live in than it sounds. It sits between olive and forest depending on the light, and against yellow gold it reads warm rather than cold.
