How to measure your ring size at home
You only need a ruler and either an existing ring or a strip of paper.
Method 1 — Measure a ring that already fits
- Take a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably.
- Lay it flat and measure the inside diameter in millimetres, straight across from inner edge to inner edge.
- Match that diameter to the Diameter (mm) column in the chart below to find your size.
Method 2 — Measure your finger with paper or string
- Wrap a thin strip of paper or a piece of string snugly around the base of the finger.
- Mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres — this is your circumference.
- Match that number to the Circumference (mm) column below.
Three tips for an accurate measurement
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their warmest and largest.
- Avoid measuring when your hands are cold — fingers can shrink by up to half a size.
- If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, size for the knuckle so the ring slides on.
- Wide bands (4mm+) fit more snugly — consider going up a quarter to half a size.

What’s the average ring size in the UK?
As a rough starting point (not a substitute for measuring): the average women’s ring size in the UK is around L–N, and the average men’s ring size is around T–V. These are averages only — hand shape varies a lot, so always measure where you can.
Can a ring be resized if it doesn’t fit?

How do I measure my ring size at home?
Either measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits and match it to a ring size chart, or wrap a strip of paper around your finger, measure the length in millimetres, and match that circumference to the chart.
How do I convert a UK ring size to a US ring size?
Use the conversion chart above. As a guide, UK size L is roughly US 6, UK N is roughly US 7, and UK R is roughly US 9. US sizes increase by half a size for each UK letter.
What is the average ring size in the UK?
The average women’s ring size in the UK is around L–N and the average men’s ring size is around T–V, though individual hands vary widely.
Is it better to size a ring up or down?
If you’re between sizes, it’s usually safer to choose the larger size — especially for a wide band, or if the finger’s knuckle is larger than its base. A slightly loose ring is easier to wear (and resize down) than one that won’t go on.

How accurate is measuring ring size with string?
The string/paper method gets you within about half a size, which is fine for a rough idea. For an engagement ring or anything precious, have your finger measured properly with a ring gauge — we’ll do it for free in store.
