Stone
replacement & resetting.
A gap where a stone should be needn’t mean the end of a piece you love. It’s never just cosmetic, it’s a setting under strain until the gap is filled. We match and re-set gemstones of every kind by hand at our Diss workshop, from sapphires, rubies and emeralds to the more unusual, drawing on a large stock of loose stones. The piece looks whole again, often invisibly.
An unusual stock to match from. We keep a wide range of loose stones, including many interesting and unusual ones, so a replacement often sits right beside the ones you’ve kept, for colour, clarity and proportion. We can also bring stones in for you to see in person, at no cost and no obligation. Lost a diamond in particular? We replace those too.
Set to last, pearls too. Whether it’s a single claw setting or a full pavé line, the stone is set by hand and checked under magnification before the piece leaves us. Loose or lost pearls on studs and rings are re-glued and re-set as well.
Sourced to match — colour, cut and proportion.
Common questions about stone replacement
How much does stone replacement cost?
Resetting a loose stone starts from around £50. Replacing a lost stone depends on the stone itself, so a small coloured accent might be £50–£150, while a larger or rarer gem is quoted on its value. As our prices move with the gold price, we’ll always confirm before any work begins. For a lost diamond, see our diamond replacement service.
Do you replace coloured and unusual gemstones?
Yes, it is much of what we do. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, opals and less common stones are all matched and set by hand. We keep a large and unusual stock, and can bring stones in for you to view at no cost before you decide.
Can you match my existing stones?
In most cases, yes. We match cut, colour and size as closely as possible, and we’ll show you the stone before setting so you’re happy with it.
Can you re-glue a loose pearl?
Yes. Pearls on studs, rings and pendants work loose over time as the old glue tires. We clean the cup and re-set the pearl securely. For a pearl necklace that needs re-threading, see our pearl restringing service.
What if I’ve lost the original stone?
No problem. We can source a replacement to suit, or bring options in for you to see at no cost. Bring the piece in and we’ll assess the setting and quote you before any work begins.
Do you replace stones in antique pieces?
We do, and with care. Older settings are often delicate, so we use laser tools where needed to protect the surrounding metal and stones.
